FAQ's

Smarter Surfaces' Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is an innovative product that prevents bacteria from growing on the whiteboard surface by utilizing silver ion antimicrobial technology to:

Interrupts bacteria and fungi cell metabolism
Inhibits cellular division
Disrupts transport across cell walls

Basically it stops the bacteria from multiplying by stopping the membrane around the cell (like the skin of the cell) from working. Antimicrobial whiteboard paint is a great solution where many people and teams will use the whiteboard paint and creating a safe working surface is a consideration.

See our antimicrobial antimicrobial whiteboard paint video.

All bacteria are microbes, however not all microbes are bacteria.

Antimicrobials can refer to agents that deal with fungi and other microbes as well as bacteria. Antibacterial agents will only deal with bacteria. They are both different from antiviral agents.

Antiviral is specifically for things such as COVID-19, which are a different type of cell. The main difference being that the viruses tend to have a fatty surround, so in order to kill viruses you often have a two-part process where you basically have to get through the fatty part to get to the virus itself.
Antimicrobial paint contains certain agents that destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, especially those that are pathogenic.

Our antibacterial paint uses broad spectrum antimicrobial technology that is effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We use a highly effective antimicrobial agent that is based on silver phosphate glass technology that kills microorganisms and stops their growth. We have developed a new whiteboard paint technology specifically designed to combat the types of bacteria that would likely be found on a surface that is used as a whiteboard.

Our antibacterial technology is registered for use by the Canadian Biocidal Products Directive.
Our antimicrobial paint will work against: MRSA, MSSA, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Our antimicrobial whiteboard paint is perfectly safe for anyone to use. All our products are isocyanate, PFOA & PFOS free and solvent free and have very low VOC levels (less than 12g/l). Smart Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is independently certified to ISO 22196 to kill bacteria such as MRSA, MSSA, Salmonella, Ecolia and Fungai.
An antibacterial agent is anything that destroys bacteria or suppresses their growth or their ability to reproduce. Antibacterial agents will only work against bacteria but will not be effective against viruses or fungi such as MRSA, MSSA, or Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
To achieve a flawless whiteboard finish, please follow these steps:

Preparation - patch any imperfections on the surface with decorators filler, then sand it smooth and eliminate any dust from sanding. Apply two coats of White Primer and allow it to dry overnight before applying the antimicrobial whiteboard paint.

Make sure to use a separate roller for both the primer and the Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint. If the same roller is used, the moisture from cleaning the roller may negatively impact the antimicrobial whiteboard paint.

Only paint within the designated coverage area indicated on the can. Overextending the paint application can adversely affect the performance of the whiteboard.

Keep in mind that this is a one-coat specialized coating. For the best results, we recommend rolling over the surface multiple times with the roller to ensure complete coverage and avoid any missed spots. After completing a section, pause and visually check for any areas that may have been overlooked.

Our award-winning Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is backed by a ten-year performance guarantee.

Each kit comes with a roller designed for use with Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint. For optimal results, apply the paint using a mohair or lint-free short pile roller sleeve. If you opt for a mohair roller, ensure that all loose fibers are removed before use.
Antibacterial paint for walls can be applied to nearly any smooth surface, including glass, metal, concrete, and wood. If you are using Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint - Clear over a colored surface, we advise you to use our Clear Primer for optimal results. For Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint – White, it’s crucial to first prime the surface with White Primer or a quality water-based white primer.

You can apply Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint Clear over any color, but avoid using it over white, as it may tint the surface. For the best outcome, use Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint White on a white surface.
Yes, for a whiteboard effect on glass, apply Smarter Surfaces Primer first. For a clear finish, apply Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint Clear directly to the glass, or for a standard whiteboard effect, use Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint.
Yes. Ensure the surface is smooth before application. Fill in any holes with filler. Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is an excellent option for repairing most surfaces of whiteboards. It can be applied directly to existing whiteboards after using White Primer (note that a primer is necessary before applying antimicrobial whiteboard paint), ensuring that all marker residue is cleaned off beforehand. For blackboards, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to eliminate any old chalk, then coat with White Primer, followed by the application of Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint.
A primer helps in achieving a smooth finish on the surface. It also serves to ‘seal’ the surface. This means that when you apply Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint on a primed surface, the components of the paint remain on the wall instead of being absorbed. Using a primer or sealer results in a smoother surface that provides optimal write-on-wipe-off functionality.
A traditional fan heater helps expedite the drying process. An infrared lamp may be used; however, it must not be positioned too near the surface.
In most cases, yes, you can paint over antimicrobial whiteboard paint. However, it's important to ensure proper adhesion and compatibility between the existing antimicrobial whiteboard paint and the new paint.

During the initial 30 days following application, we suggest cleaning your surface daily with the provided microfiber cloth. After this period, it is advisable to clean the surface weekly with a conventional whiteboard cleaner.
This may be due to improper application techniques or the paint being "stretched" to cover a larger area than recommended. It is essential to adhere to the Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint Application Guide for all applications. The paint is formulated to cover the designated area indicated in the kit and should not be extended to cover a larger space than advised.
We suggest using our Permanent Ink Remover on the problematic spots of your surface. This product delivers outstanding performance, but it is not intended for routine cleaning. If you need assistance with any concern, please send a photo of the affected area, along with your order number and the total surface area (in square meters) to support@smartersurfaces.co.uk.

Wait for two minutes, and then clean it off. If this method does not succeed, try using the Permanent Ink Remover available in our online store. This cleaner is intended to eliminate permanent markers, tough stains, and ghosting on whiteboards and antimicrobial whiteboard-painted surfaces.
To remove stains from a whiteboard, first, try using a dry erase eraser or a soft cloth with a whiteboard cleaner. If the stain persists, use Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover on troublesome areas of your surface. This is an extremely high performing product which is not suitable for daily cleaning.
Dry Erase Paint comes in a white finish or a clear (transparent) finish. The clear finish allows you to maintain the original color or design on your wall while enjoying the benefits of whiteboard functionality.

For optimal projection quality, we recommend using one of our projection screen solutions that are designed for projection purposes.
If you see a hotspot on the surface, simply adjust the angle of your projector to remove it. For a high-quality projector surface, we suggest using one of our Projector Paints. If you want a surface that functions as both a projector screen and a whiteboard, opt for our Whiteboard Wallpaper Low Sheen.
